Singing the Archives / Manuscript and Sound
Victimae Paschali Laudes (mixed group)
This chant is one of only 4 sequences that is still used in Catholic Liturgy and is typically sung on Easter Sunday before the Alleluia. A sequence is a chant set to newly-composed, syllabic lines of rhymed poetry. The library’s manuscript is from a book produced for a convent in Poissy, France. The recordings here present the melody for women only (representing the nuns in Poissy) as well as a mixed group of singers for comparison.

Translation
Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer sacrifice and praise. The sheep are ransomed by the Lamb; and Christ, the undefiled, hath sinners to his Father reconciled. Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign.
