Singing the Archives

Singing the Archives / Manuscript and Sound

Et Lucis Aeternae

This chant is from the Requiem, or mass for the dead. This section of text is not often used in a multi-movement Requiem setting. This is the only full chant found on a panel of a lampshade made of medieval manuscripts in the library’s collection. The lampshade was likely assembled by an early 20th century music historian or manuscript collector, a curious project which includes 5 panels of cut-up medieval manuscripts. Appropriately and amusingly, the chant text itself references “eternal light.”
